Choosing the right bridal party

How do I choose my bridal party?

how to choose your bridal partyPlanning your wedding requires a lot of decision making. From choosing the venue, picking your dress, the invites, choosing a cake, picking your colors, and so much more; few are more important than choosing your bridesmaids and groomsmen. They are the folks that will be by your side on one of the most important days of your life, so naturally, you want to choose wisely. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the task, here are the five crucial questions to ask yourself as you choose your bridal party.

1. How big is the wedding and reception going to be?

According to tradition, the number of bridesmaids you have is determined by the size and type of your wedding. Formal weddings have larger bridal parties, and informal weddings stick to the smaller side. While this rule can be interpreted as you wish, it is still smart to keep your bridal party proportionate to your number of guests.

2. What does my groom and our immediate families want?

Believe it or not, the groom and both of your immediate families has their own set of opinions and they might not always mirror yours. So be sure to agree on the number and structure of the bridal party as soon as possible. Also, it’s not uncommon if you have a different number of groomsmen and bridesmaids, but you’ll just need to get creative with your processional.

3. How rooted is our connection?

All other considerations are secondary to this one; the one absolute requirement is that you choose the people in your life that mean the most to you. Family, life-long friends, those people that have always been there for you and always will. You want to surround yourself in a bridal party that has a very deep and lasting connection to the bride or groom.

4. For bridesmaids, is she bridesmaid material? Are the groomsmen up to the task?

Sure, it’s a harsh question, but being in a bridal party does come with responsibilities. If your person of choice is so swamped with work or personal issues that he or she can barely squeeze in a girlfriend chat or a night out with the guys, chances are slim that they be able to join you at your bridal shower, bachelor or bachelorette, and beyond. If it’s still important to you to invite them despite the circumstances, kindly acknowledge how busy they are when you ask them and offer a less-involved alternative, like greeting guests or doing a toast in case they can’t commit. Let’s face it, planning the bachelor or bachelorette party alone is a daunting task!

5. Are they supportive of our marriage?

Traditionally speaking, your bridesmaids and groomsmen are there to support you and hold you accountable to the vows made on your wedding day. This means they should definitely be big fans of your future spouse and that “rest-of-your-life relationship” you’re entering into. If one of your pals has never been too fond of your fiancé, or never fully supported your engagement, they probably are not the best fit for your bridal party.
