1004_NWS_KG-wedding-1.jpgWhen Hanover wedding couple Jodi Little and Michael Markle were searching for wedding venues, they instantly fell in love with the Gettysburg amphitheater.

The pair though the two fire pits on stage would add ambience to a fall wedding.

But after the government shutdown, Little and Markle had to cancel the dream wedding they planned for Oct. 19. The amphitheater is part of the Gettysburg National Military Park, which has been closed since 10 a.m. Tuesday. Now, Little and Markle are scrambling to reorganize their big day.

“We were ready to go,” 29-year-old Little said Thursday.

Little and her 31-year-old fiance paid a $50 fee when they filled out an application to rent the amphitheater. She said the park would refund the fee, but she isn’t sure if she’ll receive the money if the government opens again before her wedding date.

She hopes the National Park Service will give the money back.

“Every penny counts when you are planning a wedding,” Little said.

Family and friends still need to be notified of the change and the couple isn’t looking forward to making those calls, she said.

Although most brides-to-be would be stressed changing their venue in less than a month, Little is even more determined to make the day memorable.

“Nothing is going to stop us,” she said. “We are still getting married and it’ll be beautiful no matter what.”

After waiting four years to marry Markle, Little won’t let the shutdown setbacks ruin her excitement

for the big day. The couple will still have their outdoor wedding on Oct. 19, but it will be in a relative’s backyard in Hanover instead.

“I’m excited to see the look on his face when I walk down the aisle,” she said. “I wonder if he’ll cry or have a huge smile.”

Markle and Little met at South Western Middle School, but didn’t start dating until 2009. They fell for each other after going to Las Vegas with a mutual friend, Little said.

Markle can’t wait for the wedding because the couple already have a house and a 3-year-old son together.

“I’ll finally be able to call her my wife after all these years,” Markle said.
